Reducing deaths by suicide is a key priority at national, regional, and local levels. Preventing suicide is everyone’s business. Suicide prevention isn’t just about numbers; it’s about understanding the people behind those numbers.
Through detailed analysis, we explored how different factors like sex, age, and levels of deprivation intersect and influence risk. This helped us go beyond surface-level trends and get a clearer picture of who is most vulnerable.
We used a rate per 100,000 people to make comparisons between groups fair and meaningful, even if those populations varied in size. The data was directly standardised, meaning we adjusted for factors like age structure, so any differences we see aren’t just due to a younger or older population.
This insight allows commissioners to target resources to those most at risk and shape an effective, compassionate suicide prevention strategy.
